Halloween Fun in the Chicago Area for SeniorsOctober 11, 2022
Halloween is a beloved holiday for a reason: it’s great fun. With trick-or-treating, parties, movies, and other festivities, there is something for all age groups to enjoy. While not all Halloween events were made with the entire family in mind, there are still great options for Halloween fun in the Chicago area for seniors.
No two seniors are alike. Some prefer the energy of a crowd, while others might want a quieter engagement. Whatever you or your loved one prefers, there is likely something to pique your interest on this list.
Night of 1,000 Jack-o-Lanterns
During the day, the Chicago Botanic Gardens are a beautiful spectacle of greenery. At night for two weekends in October, however, visitors can explore 1,000 carved pumpkins—some of which are over 150 pounds. Seniors will enjoy a walk through the scenery ornamented with entertainers and refreshments.
Arts in the Dark
Arts in the Dark is a nighttime parade in the heart of Chicago that celebrates the artistic side of the holiday. Costumed performers, large-scale puppets, and impressive floats take to the streets just after sunset. The event is totally free, but you may want to arrive early in order to ensure you find a good spot.
Consider bringing folding chairs, as standing for long periods of time can be exhausting. You could even choose to have dinner at a restaurant along the parade route. This will allow you a vision of the parade while avoiding the crowded streets.
Haunted History or Ghost Tours
With nearly 200 years of history, Chicago is home to many ghost stories. If you enjoy the macabre, you might appreciate a history or ghost tour this Halloween season. Comb through the list of tours to find out what is the best option for you. Find them across the entire city, from Lakeview to Lincoln Park, to Navy Pier.
Some seniors may be fine with walking tours, while others may prefer to travel by bus. There are even options by boat or segway.
Go to a spooky drive-in
Horror films are showing across the city all October, but choose to tap into a little nostalgia by heading to Chi-Town Movies Drive-In. Classic horror films are shown every day throughout the entire month. This is perfect for seniors who want to get out of the home, but don’t want to navigate through crowds. Make an event of it by inviting friends and family and bringing snacks.
Holy Ghost Bingo
If you enjoy comedy and bingo, combine them by attending the Greenhouse Theater’s Holy Ghost Bingo. In this interactive comedy bingo show, audience members are quizzed on Halloween and Catholic traditions. It is a true bingo game, so you’ll leave with laughs and maybe even prizes!
Jack’s Pumpkin Pop-Up
Jack’s Pumpkin brings the fun of a pumpkin patch directly to the city all month long. This pop-up is full of family-friendly activities, such as a corn maze, thousands of pumpkins, carnival games, and food. Unlike a standard pumpkin patch, however, you are required to buy tickets. Be aware of that before heading out.
Home caregivers can help you enjoy the holiday season
With the stress of activities of daily living to worry about, some seniors might feel like they have to skip out on Halloween in Chicago. Don’t let that be you this year. A home caregiver can assist with whatever non-medical needs you require so you can enjoy Halloween fun in the Chicago area for seniors, including:
- Personal care
- Meal preparation
- Medication reminders
- Light housekeeping and laundry
- Brain games
