Mother’s Day for Seniors in Home Care

May 2, 2021

Mother’s Day for Seniors in Home Care: If it’s the second week in May, there’s one thing you can count on. Panicked children of elderly moms trying to figure out how to properly celebrate Mother’s Day. After all, you aren’t a kid anymore. And the handmade card and coupon for a free hug just isn’t going to cut it this year.

And if your mom lives at home across town, breakfast in bed is probably out as well. So how best to celebrate Mother’s Day when your mom is a senior in home care? We have a few ideas to celebrate Mother’s Day for Seniors in Home Care.

Celebrating Mother’s Day with a Mom in Home Care

Your first instinct might be to have a Mother’s Day celebration with your mom at her home. And making it so that she doesn’t have to leave the house can be a great idea. But keep in mind that she may want to make sure her home is sparkling clean for your visit, and it might be the case that she isn’t able to do that by herself anymore.

While it’s always a good idea for her to get some help at home in order to keep her place clean, she may not want the added stress of company. So consider hosting Mom yourself this year. A Mother’s Day celebration doesn’t have to be elaborate, and since COVID restrictions mean restaurants are operating at reduced in-person capacity, the answer might be a take-out brunch from her favorite restaurant.

Many restaurants put together Mother’s Day Brunch packages, and this year are selling them to-go. Having brunch means you get to spend part of your day with your mom before she gets fatigued, and she can be home before too late, especially if she suffers from sundown syndrome.

Celebrating with Mom in Home Care from Out of Town

Travelling to celebrate Mother’s Day with your elderly mother in home care may still be difficult because of COVID restrictions, so it may be that another Zoom Mother’s Day is the best way to connect this year.

A home care aide can help your mom set up their device for a family video chat. One idea is to have lunch over Zoom. Many of the food delivery apps such as DoorDash; will allow you to order and have food delivered somewhere else while you pay for it through the app.

Gift Ideas for your Elderly Mom in Senior Home Care

Many elderly people in home care are trying to downsize their possessions, not acquire more. That can make it difficult to shop for Mother’s Day gifts. Here are a few tips to help:

  • Consumables – whether it’s your mom’s favorite chocolates, a tin of fancy teas, or even a bottle of wine you know she’ll love, giving her a treat to enjoy is a great way of celebrating Mother’s Day. Even a box filled with her favorite individual candies or other snacks can make a great gift.
  • Digitizing photos – there are many services that can scan and digitize photos, and some that will also digitize VHS and audio tapes, to create a gift such as Legacy Box.
  • A gift of stories – family stories are an important thing to many elderly moms. Collecting them can be difficult, so one company has made the process easier. They ask your elderly loved ones a question every week, and compile the resulting stories in a book.
  • Social Media Help – this is closer to the old coupon for a free hug mentioned above, but many seniors can use social media to keep up with what’s going on with their family. Setting up accounts for them, as well as some advice on good practices, can go a long way toward easing their confusion and letting them connect to their family in a new way.

These are just a few things that can help your elderly mom celebrate Mother’s Day without adding to her stuff. You may also consider getting her regular help from a home care aide; in order to help her when it’s not Mother’s Day.
