Fun Things for Seniors in Chicago this Month

August 3, 2022

Summer in the city of Chicago is like no other. The city comes to life with street festivals, live music, and other free events in a way it doesn’t any other season. And while the official start of fall isn’t until the end of September, many see August as the last great month for summer fun in the city of Chicago.

Take advantage of the warm weather with these fun things for seniors in Chicago this month. While these events aren’t necessarily designed for seniors, they should be accessible and enjoyable for older adults.

Millennium Park Summer Film Series

People of all ages can enjoy this summer fun. Each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., guests are invited to enjoy a free movie at Millennium Park. You don’t have to worry about the quality of the picture– the movie is displayed on a state-of-the-art, 40-foot LED screen.

Take a seat at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, or on the Great Lawn. Bring out your grandchildren or friends and enjoy the fun—just remember to grab water, proper sun protection, and perhaps a chair for optimal comfort. The final date is September 6.

Grant Park Music Festival

If you are a lover of classical music, the Grant Park Music Festival is perfect for you. It is the only free outdoor classical-music concert series in the United States and features the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, the Grant Park Chorus, and other guests. Enjoy Haydn’s “Creation,” Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty,” A Mariachi Fiesta, the 60th Anniversary Choral Spectacular, and so much more.

The concert series takes place at several parks across the city, but the Jay Pritzker Pavilion serves as the main stomping ground. Some of the events offer reserved seating if you don’t mind spending money to secure a seat. Just don’t think about it too long– the final night is August 20.

Rockin’ in the Park

If classic rock is more your style, go to the Rosemont Parkway Bank Park for a Thursday night Rockin’ in the Park concert. Upcoming shows include a Beatles tribute band, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band, and a Motley Crue tribute band. Feel free to start the night with dinner at one of the surrounding concerts, or to come for the live music and leave.

Thursday shows end with a fireworks display, so keep that in mind as you plan out your Thursday evening.

Museum of Ice Cream

What could be better than ice cream in the summer? How about an entire museum dedicated to it. The Museum of Ice Cream opened its Chicago location this summer, and it’s just as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the mouth. Enjoy 14 gorgeous installations, play some Putt-Putt golf, and of course, eat unlimited ice cream.

Wake up your inner child and reserve a ticket. If you are concerned about crowds, consider visiting at one of the earlier time slots.

Shakespeare in the Park

Shakespeare in the Park is a quintessential, summer tradition in Chicago. Another free event, a company of actors tour through 18 Chicago parks to perform some of Shakespeare’s more recognized, beloved plays. Find out what event is closest to you, grab a chair, and go.

Attend a street festival

Each weekend, vendors, musicians, and food trucks take to the streets of our various Chicago neighborhoods. Some celebrate different cultures, some celebrate foods, and others just celebrate summer. Look into this guide to 2022 Chicago Festivals to find out what interests you, and take in the sights. Just check the weather before you go so you can be sure you’re ready for anything!

Architecture River Cruise

While you could hop on a river cruise any time, the best time of year to enjoy one is during the summer. Chicago’s architecture is rich in not only design but in history. Enjoy the warm weather and breeze off the water, and listen to the city’s history.

Even if you’ve been on a river cruise before, no two tours are exactly alike. You may find some interesting pieces of new information.

Take advantage of the weather and get outside!

However, as you’re spending time in the summer sun, make sure you take care of yourself in the heat. Stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and have a cool place to relax when you start to overheat.

Our in-home care workers can help you enjoy the summer by taking care of some care tasks that have grown difficult. Between meal planning, errands, organization, and personal care, you can rest easy knowing your needs are in good hands. Call us at 773-274-9262 to learn more.
