Quick and Easy Exercise During the Holiday Season for Caregivers

It’s hard to believe we have already entered the holiday season. The final month of the year goes out with a bang of festive lights and celebrations with loved ones that, while they are great fun, can be added stress for caregivers. Finding time to juggle not only the responsibilities of care, but obligations brought on by holidays challenges family caregivers. This doesn’t even take into account their self-care needs.

But now more than ever, it is crucial that you make time to get moving. Physical activity positively impacts all aspects of your living, from your mental health, to your sleep patterns, to even the foods you choose to eat. Working out can feel like a near-impossible task this time of year, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Even 20 minutes of exercise can make a valuable impact on your health. So, this December, incorporate some quick and easy exercise during the holiday season for caregivers.

Quick and Easy Exercise During the Holiday Season for Caregivers

Create a step goal

One of the easiest ways to make an impact on your health without it feeling disruptive is by following a step goal. Whether you’re doing chores around the house or running errands for your loved one, getting in these additional steps is great for your health. On average, the recommended number of steps for adults is about 10,000 a day. If that is an intimidating goal, start lower and work your way up.

Go for a family walk

Regular walks are some of the best forms of exercise—even during the coldest months of the year. It is a low-impact exercise that encourages blood flow without the risk of overexertion. As the whole family comes together for your holiday celebrations, make a point to go on walks together. You, your elderly loved one, and the rest of your family members can spend time connecting while still raising your heart rate.

Put exercise into your chores

Regular tasks you have to accomplish for your elderly loved one can be completed with an additional pep in your step. Add some exercises to these chores—such as doing lunges as you vacuum or squats as you wash dishes. Even a few minutes of this additional activity can work up a sweat.

Workouts you can complete in less than half an hour

If you are looking for an outlet to truly work up a sweat, but don’t have the time to spend an hour at the gym, try these exercise regimens. Each can be completed in the comfort of your home, saving you travel time.

  • Yoga. Yoga is fantastic for reducing stress levels, which you may feel a spike in during the busy holiday season. Starting your day with a yoga session sets you up for success. On the other hand, ending the day with one could help you wind down.
  • Go for a run. Even if you’ve never gone for a run in your life, now is a great time to try. A run or jog can be as long as you’d like, allowing you to adjust the exercise regimen to fit your needs and lifestyle best. Just make sure you bundle up!
  • 10-minute cardio blast. Even if your day is completely packed, you can find 10 minutes to get moving. This low-impact exercise requires no equipment and works out your entire body. It can be done in conjunction with other exercises, or just when you need a little movement.

Home care during the holiday season

Family caregivers are some of the hardest-working individuals—especially during the holiday season. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the plethora of responsibilities you have, you may benefit from the support of an at-home caregiver. These professionals can take over your care responsibilities as little or as often as necessary, allowing you the freedom to complete your holiday to-do list.
