Showing Kindness on World Kindness Day

November 11, 2022

Every day of the year, we’re bombarded with new stories about everything wrong in the world. In direct contrast to that, World Kindness Day was designed to highlight the good in our respective communities. Celebrated on November 13, the holiday encourages us all to spread kindness.

Showing kindness on World Kindness Day is a great way for seniors to switch up their routines and feel good while doing so—in more than one way. Studies show that those who are consistently kind produce 23% less cortisol (the stress hormone), which can have an impact on your aging. It has also been shown to release oxytocin, which lowers your blood pressure.

But how does one celebrate a day devoted to positivity? Use this blog for ideas for showing kindness on World Kindness Day.

Showing Kindness on World Kindness Day

Send unsolicited kind words to loved ones

While we appreciate our loved ones every day of the year, it isn’t often we outwardly express it. So, send your family members a short, sweet message expressing what it is you love about them. While it may not be possible for everyone, it’s even sweeter if you can do this with a physical note. This could mean dropping a short letter in your neighbor’s mailbox or placing a note next to your caregiver’s purse.

Bring treats to a friend

Brighten a friend’s day by treating them to their sweet of choice. If you enjoy baking, homemade goods add an additional touch that your friend will appreciate, but store-bought options are just as nice. Drop them off and visit for a few minutes.

If you want to treat a friend who doesn’t live nearby, there are several delivery services that can get it right to your friend’s door. Try UberEats or Doordash.

Pay it forward

If you run to a coffee shop for a warm drink, consider paying for the person’s drink behind you. The stranger will be truly touched by your gesture. It’s even possible your kindness will start a chain of events. The person behind you may decide to continue paying it forward, which could go on for quite some time!

Give random compliments

You’d be surprised how a small compliment can lift another person’s day. If you see someone has a coat you like, their hair is styled nicely, or you notice they have a sweet smile, compliment them on it. It may be uncomfortable to talk to a stranger, but the joy this random act of kindness brings you both will be well worth it.

Your kindness will have an impact on your health

Donate to an organization, or donate your time

If you have free time, consider volunteering for a non-profit, hospital, or other volunteer organization that means a lot to you. You’ll directly impact the lives of those who need help, as well as those who already work with the organization.

However, not everyone has the mobility to volunteer for an organization, and that is okay. Instead, consider donating to your organization of choice. There is a misconception that you have to give an exorbitant amount of money to make a difference, and that simply isn’t true. Even five dollars can help.

Don’t forget to show yourself kindness

In a day all about showing people kindness, don’t forget that you are a part of that list. Enjoy a quality meal, your hobby of choice, and make sure you get some good sleep. If you have the time, treat yourself to a special dessert, or perhaps a certain item of clothing you’ve been eying. Whatever it is, you should end the day feeling you’ve done well for others as well as yourself.
